Former L/L-M star Max Musland transferring from UJ

Apr. 9—LAMOURE, N.D. — Former LaMoure/Litchville-Marion basketball star Max Musland has decided to enter the transfer portal after one season at the University of Jamestown.

“I want to be on a team where I have a little bit more impact, not quite so many guys on one team, where I can overall try and play a little bit earlier,” Musland said.

Musland officially announced his decision in a post on X on April 1. He said he made the decision in mid-March.

“It was very difficult. I really like Jamestown. It’s a good college, good town, good people and whatnot,” Musland said. “But at the same time, you gotta do what’s best for me, and sometimes it’s a little easier to leave early than stay longer, it’s harder to leave the longer you stay.”

Musland redshirted and played on the Jimmies junior varsity team in his freshman year. While he was at UJ, Musland was majoring in business management.

“I grew a lot, definitely with individual workouts every weekend or small group workouts and lifting,” Musland said. “They’ve taught me a lot here this year. It’s been good.”

While Jimmies JV stats are not available, during his senior season as a Loboe, Musland averaged 25.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. He was a North Dakota Mr. Basketball finalist and a first team All-State selection.

After the season, Musland met with Jimmies head coach Casey Bruggeman and told him about his desire to leave the program.

“He was very supportive about everything and helping me through everything,” Musland said.

When he committed to the Jimmies in May 2024, Musland said he was deciding between the Jimmies and Concordia College in Minnesota.

“It’s gonna be a little different now that I’ve been in college I know what’s going on, I know what to look for and I know what to expect,” Musland said. “… It’s definitely gonna help because I know Jamestown’s a good college and I like it, but just the basketball didn’t quite work out for me. I know what to look for in a college, close-knit community I kind of like. … It’s good I know what to look for.”

Musland said he is not sure yet whether or not he wants to stay at the NAIA level or go up to a higher level. Since his post on X, Musland said he has heard from the Concordia College (Minnesota), Minnesota State University Moorhead and Hamline University (Minnesota).

“I want to help whatever team I go to win and make an impact any way I can,” Musland said.

When he looks ahead to his basketball future, Musland’s criteria is pretty simple.

“Just a good together team that wants to win, I guess,” Musland said. “I want a place that has a spot for me and they think I can play.”
