Baseball notebook: Lincolnview, Leipsic get wins over Fort Jennings

Apr. 8—MIDDLE POINT — With the graduation of eight players from last year’s Northwest Conference championship baseball team, Lincolnview coach Eric Fishpaw is depending on his underclassmen to fill the voids this spring.

After a strong start, Fishpaw is feeling a little more at ease with his situation.

In Thursday’s 10-5 non-conference win over visiting Fort Jennings, Lincolnview pounded 14 base hits, including seven hits in its big seven-run fifth inning.

The most impressive thing about Lincolnview’s seven hits in the fifth inning was that they came off Fort Jennings ace Jarron Swick, who came in to pitch the fourth and fifth innings.

“When Swick came in — who is a phenomenal pitcher — we had our No. nine-hole hitter up, Grant Zielke,” Fishpaw said. “You have two options. … You are either going to shy away from him or you are going to embrace it. I thought our guys did a great job of embracing it, stepping up to the challenge and coming through with a big seven spot.”

Zielke went 2 for 3, including a double and two RBI.

Fort Jennings led 5-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth.

That was when Lincolnview’s bats got busy.

The Lancers sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, scored seven runs on seven hits and pulled out to a 9-5 advantage.

For the game, Holden Price led the Lincolnview hitting attack, going 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Other Lincolnview players who recorded two hits were Chayse Overholt, Myles Moody and Seth Brant.

Conlan Hatfield got the starting nod on the mound for Lincolnview. The sophomore right-hander worked four innings before giving way to Gavin Evans.

Hatfield gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out four, while throwing 61 pitches.

Evans pitched 2 1/3 innings before being replaced in the seventh. Evans gave up two runs (two unearned), while striking out two and walking three. Sophomore Seth Brant came in to pitch in the seventh and recorded the final two outs.

Leipsic bounces back against Fort Jennings

LEIPSIC — Leipsic’s 4-2 baseball win over Fort Jennings on Tuesday gave the Vikings a victory in their Putnam County League opener and also put a one-sided loss to Elida in their season opener behind them.

Leipsic scored all the runs it needed when it got three of them in the bottom of the first inning.

Then senior pitchers Tommy Offenbacher and Nick Schroeder held Fort Jennings to two runs and five hits and the Vikings added a fourth run in the third inning on a cold, breezy day.

“I thought Tommy and Nick just really did a nice job today,” Leipsic coach Darren Henry said. “I’m really proud of how they pitched on a tough day to pitch. The Fort Jennings pitchers did a good job too on a tough day to pitch for sure,” he said.

Offenbacher allowed three hits and two runs, struck out eight and walked two in four innings on the mound.

“I did all right but I just trusted my defense to work behind me and they made plays for me all day,” said Offenbacher, who has committed to Capital University.

Fort Jennings starter Owen Calvelage went 2 1/3 innings, allowed four runs and six hits, struck out two and walked one. Jarron Swick (no runs, one hit, three strikeouts, one walk) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for the Musketeers.

Leipsic’s three-run first inning began with Schroeder drawing a walk and stealing second base.

Offenbacher, the next batter, singled to right field and went to second base on a throw to the plate. No. 3 hitter Ty Lammers singled to score Offenbacher and Colin Niese’s double scored Lammers.

In the third inning, Offenbacher, Niese and Myles Camareno singled to load the bases and a wild pitch scored Offenbacher for a 4-0 lead.

Fort Jennings got its two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Swick singled, advanced on a walk and a stolen base and he and Adam Hoersten scored on a Leipsic error.

Offenbacher was 2 for 2 and Niese and Camareno both were 2 for 3.
