Youth softball: Velocity wind up 2nd at national tournament

Jul. 22—EAGAN — The Willmar Velocity wrapped a memorable summer Sunday with a second-place finish in a national tournament.

The Velocity age 12-and-under fastpitch softball team lost in the championship game of the North American Fastpitch Association Northern Nationals to the Wisconsin Chaos 5-4.

Willmar played in the Silver bracket.

It wrapped up a long weekend in which the Velocity, which went 1-1-1 in pool play. They tied Waconia Gold 2-2 then lost 9-0 to Prodigy Fastpitch of Harper, Nebraska on Thursday.

On Friday, the Velocity beat the Minnesota Moose 5-3, Mahtomedi Blue 10-0 and the Osseo-Maple Grove 12C 9-0,

Willmar then had two more games Saturday, beating the Wisconsin Chaos 3-1 and the Fusion Heat of South Dakota 5-4.

On Sunday the Velocity posted an 11-4 victory over the Cottage Grove Athletic Association Green, which led to the rematch with the Chaos.

Tournament games were played in Eagan and West St. Paul.

Velocity 12U team members are Claire DeLeeuw, Amelia Kveene, Aspen Krakow, Lily Lingl, Ayla Rudenick, Revalee Serrano, Ashtyn Solberg, Maggie Strand, Brooklyn Wadsworth and Sydney Zuidema.

Coaches are Kelly Zuidema, Britney Lingl and Luke Solberg.

The Velocity won the Wilmar Softball Association’s first state championship in order to advance the NAFA Northern Nationals. All 12 players on the team this summer are from Willmar.
