The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Friday, securing a 9-6 win in the series opener. It was an impressive offensive showing for the Yankees, who furthered their lead atop the American League in runs scored.

More importantly, New York continued its dominance atop the AL East. Now 39-23, the Yankees own a 5.5 game lead over the second place Tampa Bay Rays and a 10.5 game lead over the Red Sox who sit in fourth.

While it was a solid win on Friday, not everything was good for the Yankees. Shortstop Anthony Volpe was forced to exit in the fourth inning after being hit by a pitch from Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler.

While Volpe was hit in the second, he was not removed until the fourth when New York was up 7-0. This led to some initial optimism that his removal was more precautionary. The team later revealed an official update on X.

“Anthony Volpe left tonight’s game with a left elbow contusion,” the Yankees announced during the game. “X-rays and CT scan are being performed currently.”

The results of those tests were revealed postgame by manager Aaron Boone, who said the X-rays and CT scans came back negative.

This is good news for the Yankees. Just 24 years old, Volpe owns a .766 OPS this season. Despite hitting just .190 over his last seven games, he has homered in two of his last four games, showcasing the power he displayed earlier in the season when he hit four home runs in his first five games.
