Jul. 22—PERHAM — The Bemidji American junior Legion baseball team bought itself another two weeks of baseball.
The Woodpeckers went unbeaten at the District F Substate Tournament in Perham over the weekend, defeating East Grand Forks 10-0 in five innings, Perham 6-2 and Fergus Falls 7-0 in the title game.
The postseason tournament was originally supposed to be in Bemidji. However, damage from the June 21 storm forced the location to shift to Perham instead.
Post 14 dispatched East Grand Forks in short order behind Wyatt Tverstol’s dual-threat performance. He threw a five-inning no-hitter and went 4 for 4 at the plate. He finished with two RBIs, while Miles Gish went 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and two RBIs.
Gish threw all seven innings in the semifinal against Perham, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Bemidji scored six runs on just three hits. Gish walked four times.
Lawson Berg carried the load for the Woodpeckers in the championship game. He went 1 for 3 with a home run, all while throwing a complete-game shutout. He surrendered just three hits without a walk while striking out six batters.
Bemidji will head to the state tournament in Bloomington Aug. 1-3.
