WNBA Legend Sue Bird Loses Spot in History Books on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It’s a known fact that Hall of Fame guard Sue Bird is one of the greatest players in WNBA history. The four-time champion had a decorated 21-year career — all with the Seattle Storm — which, among her many other accolades, produced 13 All-Star appearances and eight All-WNBA nods.
Bird also ranks in the Top 10 in the WNBA’s all-time scoring list with 6,803 career points. On Thursday, however, the 44-year-old lost her previous spot on the esteemed list as former WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike rewrote the history books.
The WNBA took to social media to announce that Ogwumike has officially surpassed Bird for the No. 8 spot on the league’s all-time scoring list after the Storm star scored her 6,804th career point against the Atlanta Dream.
“Continued greatness. 🌟 With her 5th FGM vs. the Dream, Nneka Ogwumike passes Sue Bird (6,803) for 8th all-time on the All-Time Points List!” the league posted on X.
In a way, it’s only fitting that it’s a Storm player who has taken Bird’s place on the all-time scoring list. After all, Bird is widely considered one of the greatest players in Seattle franchise history.
Ogwumike’s status as a Storm legend hasn’t been established quite yet. The 10-time All-Star is currently in her second season with Seattle after spending the first 12 years of her career with the Los Angeles Sparks.
In 17 games this season, Ogwumike has produced averages of 17.0 points on 53.1% shooting, 7.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.1 triples per game, leading the Storm to a 10-7 record for the No. 5 spot in the WNBA, as of writing.
