Who is Commanders WR Luke McCaffrey working out with ahead of training camp?

Who will be a breakout player for the Washington Commanders in 2025? Second-year tight end Ben Sinnott is a popular choice, as is rookie cornerback Trey Amos. Don’t forget about second-year wide receiver Luke McCaffrey.

A third-round pick from Rice in the 2024 NFL draft, McCaffrey played in all 17 games, made four starts and finished his rookie season with 18 receptions for 168 yards. McCaffrey’s role on offense diminished throughout last season, but he did take over as the primary kick returner. McCaffrey didn’t necessarily struggle as a receiver; he caught 75% of his targets and posted one of the best separation percentages at receiver in 2024. However, quarterback Jayden Daniels seemed more comfortable with his veteran targets, such as Terry McLaurin, Zach Ertz, Olamide Zaccheaus and Austin Ekeler.

With less than one month before training camp begins, McCaffrey is staying ready. On Thursday, the NFL’s official Instagram page shared a photo of McCaffrey training with his brother Christian and Falcons superstar Bijan Robinson. The picture was taken either before or after a workout. Luke McCaffrey looks ready to go.

Fans often give up on young players too quickly if they’re not stars as rookies. Remember, McCaffrey is still new to the receiver position. A former college quarterback, he didn’t switch to receiver until before his junior season. McCaffrey understands route running, and his father, Ed, is a former Pro Bowl receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion. Success is in McCaffrey’s bloodline. So is a strong work ethic.

So, when you’re wondering who will step up as Washington’s No. 3 receiver behind McLaurin and Deebo Samuel in 2025, keep an eye on McCaffrey. He’s reportedly had a strong offseason and has all the tools to be a successful NFL wideout. At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, McCaffrey has good size to go with his 4.4 speed. He can also play inside or outside. More importantly, he’s had a full offseason to become more acquainted with Daniels.
