What will the Boston Celtics do with the roster spot opened up by JD Davison’s departure? The Celtics elected to waive the University of Alabama alum on Thursday (July 25) afternoon, presumably to get the team’s roster under the NBA’s second apron and all the penalties that brings teams like Boston. In so doing, they opened up a roster spot, but one that will require the right sort of player to fill on several levels, if they fill it at all.

In order to make use of the roster spot in a way that makes sense, the Celtics would need to find a player making (or able to make) less than Davison did to keep the team from ending up right back where they started. Add in that the front office is likely looking for younger talent able to provide low-cost depth for when Boston gets back to trying to contend, and the pool of potential fits gets slim in a hurry — at least before the passing of some of the regular season or other trades makes such moves less difficult.

The cohosts of “Havlicek Stole the Pod” took some time on a recent episode of their show with guest Justin Turpin of WEEI to look at what Boston might do with that roster spot, as well as what else is on the team’s plate in terms of issues needing closure for the rest of the 2025 NBA offseason. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about that roster spot and more.
