What to know about Jacob Misiorowski’s early exit after rolling his ankle in MLB debut with Brewers

Jacob Misiorowski, Milwaukee’s No. 3 prospect entering the season and ranked 21st now in all of baseball by Baseball America, became the first pitcher in franchise history and only the sixth since 1901 to finish with no hits allowed in at least five innings in his first career outing as the Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 June 12 at American Family Field.

Misiorowski might have worked deeper into the game but three pitches into the sixth inning he rolled his right ankle on the mound and was lifted from the game with what was later described as cramping in his right thigh and calf.

Misiorowski said he was fine after the game.

“Good,” is how Misiorowski described his physical condition afterward. “Cramped up. My ankle, I just rolled it. All good. Nothing crazy.”

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the plan after the fifth inning was to go batter by batter with Misiorowski in the sixth. Opening the sixth against Cardinals outfielder Victor Scott II, Misiorowski appeared to catch his cleats in the dirt and rolled his right ankle as a result.

The Brewers, not taking any chances with their future star, pulled him as the crowd of 27,687 gave him a standing ovation.

The 2022 second-round draft pick agreed it was a tough way to depart a dazzling debut.

“Yeah, of course. I don’t want to leave like that,” he said. “I feel like I could have kept going. But I cramped up, and stuff happens.”

Even though he left the game a little earlier than he had hoped, his dazzling performance was certainly one of the most memorable debuts in Brewers history.

“I think I’ve been playing this thing out of my head forever,” Misiorowski said, with no concerns about his ankle. “I don’t think it’s just (since) Triple-A. I think it’s since I was a kid. I don’t think it was anywhere near what I thought. I thought I was going to give up a few hits, get your, ‘Welcome to the Show kind of experience.’ But just kind of rolled with it, and now we’re here.”

Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers walks off the field with head athletic trainer Brad Epstein with an injury against the St. Louis Cardinals during the sixth inning at American Family Field on June 12.
