Things got significantly more interesting in the New England Patriots‘ running back room with the team drafting Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson in the second round on Friday.
It was a surprise pick for a Patriots team that just signed veteran Rhamondre Stevenson to a four-year, $36 million extension last year. The team also has another proven veteran in Antonio Gibson under contract as well.
Henderson could settle in as a strong complementary option for a potential three-headed monster at running back in New England. But make no mistake, the former First-Team All-Big 10 running back is a do-everything playmaker with the potential to steal the show in the backfield.
If anything, that should light a fire under Stevenson, who has seen a dip in production along with fumbling issues over the last two seasons. Henderson is a reliable ball-carrier with elite speed on the ground. He’s also the best pass protector in the entire 2025 NFL draft class with tremendous skills as a receiver.
This is the complete running back who should make quarterback Drake Maye’s life easier. He might also prove to be the sign that Stevenson is on borrowed time in New England.
The team wouldn’t have wasted a second-round draft pick on a player they viewed as a third option behind Stevenson and Gibson. Henderson will likely have a major role in the backfield right out of the gates.
