Were blue flares in sea of Liverpool red the ultimate Everton prank?

Liverpool fans lined the streets around Anfield for a Premier League title party in a sea of red – but there was also a hint of blue with suggestions that supporters from rivals Everton may have had a cheeky say in the celebrations.

Amid the carnival scenes ahead of the fixture against Tottenham, red flares were set off with Arne Slot’s team on the brink of finishing top, although not all were in the usual Liverpool colours. Blue flares captured in footage around the ground have been credited to an Evertonian, who had revealed earlier in the week there was a cheeky plan to disrupt the festivities for Liverpool’s 20th league title.

One fan claimed his friend planned to deceive Liverpool supporters by buying blue flares and replacing them with red labels. “My mates just texted me there. He bought 10,000 blue flares and spent the last 4 weeks taking the blue labels off them and putting red labels on them. I hope he sells the f—— lot,” he wrote on X.

Liverpool’s party hardly seemed to be held up by the blue smoke – with thousands crowding around the stadium to welcome the team bus into Anfield. Virgil van Dijk will not get his hands on the trophy until the final day of the season, though, which is expected to spark another big party in the city, five years after their title triumph was celebrated in a near empty stadium due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“I enjoyed it a lot when Feyenoord won the title – but I don’t go crazy,” Slot said about his experiences of winning a title in Holland. “It wasn’t like I ran three times around the stadium. I was just very, very happy inside and I shared my emotions with the people around me and the fans. But I will never be the one who is the loudest nor the weirdest in the moment. I’m not like that.”
