In a sea of fairly standard beachbreaks around this Southern California zone, The Wedge sticks out like a bloody and broken thumb. Unruly tee-pees refract off the jetty and into a shifting lefthand ramp that looks far more suited for sending it on a bodyboard than it does for popping up on a surfboard.
Yet beauty be damned. This beast still has plenty of suitors.
Mason Ho was in California over the holiday weekend and ended up surfing The Wedge for three straight days. That in itself is noteworthy, considering how punishing the lip and the sand can be.
There’s a shocker here: Mason’s approach is entertaining and riveting. He doesn’t just wait for the barrel, he snaps on the growing corner, stalls at the bottom of a growing wall and b-lines it for the exit over dry sand. He even goes for floaters at the end of grotesque sections.
And yet, the Wedge DGAF. Mason’s signature Ding Report gets new subjects. Pour three out for those wrecked Mayhems.
