The world No. 1 had his name butchered by the first tee starter at the Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club on Saturday.
Scottie Schlopler? C’mon, man, it’s the world No. 1, who won two majors and five times this season and deserves a best-supporting role Oscar for his work in Happy Gilmore 2. It would be one thing if he screwed up Ludvig Aberg but Scheffler? The first tee announcer for the third round of the FedEx Cup finale ought to have write Scheffler’s name on a blackboard 100 times and in all serious, let’s make a call to the bullpen for Sunday’s final round because the guy doesn’t deserve this honor. Did Scheffler — don’t call him Schlopler — take note of this gaffe.
“Yes, I did,” he confirmed.
Asked if it rattled him all — he did bogey the first two holes for the first time since the third round of the 2023 PGA Championship, a span of 185 rounds according to Justin Ray — Scheffler, not Schlopler, said, “Gosh no.”

But Scheffler, not Schlopler, cut the guy a bit of slack and said his name has been mispronounced before and he’s also been confused for one of the other best golfers in the world.
“Yeah, people used to call me Xander,” Scheffler, not Schauffele, recalled. “Just par for the course there.”
It’s not the first time a first tee announcer has made this sort of faux pas. At the 2015 WM Phoenix Open, for instance, Brooks Koepka was called Brooks Cupcake before he went on to victory. But Koepka, who would eventually win majors and reach world No. 1, had yet to win on the PGA Tour. Scheffler is one of the most well-known players in the world.
Brooks Cupcake would have been a great last name for headlines, but Schlopler, not so much. Scheffler, it is.
