Washington legend compares Terry McLaurin to the best wide receiver of all time

Kay Adams told legendary Washington quarterback Joe Theismann that the easiest thing for the Commanders to do is get Terry McLaurin signed. Theismann was a guest on Adams’ show Monday,” Up & Adams.”

Well, apparently, that is not the case at all. McLaurin, the leading receiver for the Redskins/Commanders in each of his six NFL seasons, does not yet have a new contract.

Adams continued, “There is not a better player that I would find it easier to make a deal with, and make feel good than Terry McLaurin.”

Adams stated she gets texts and rumors about Washington trading McLaurin and asked Theismann how he felt about this predicament.

“That would be a major problem for all of us that appreciate what the Commanders have done, what Terry has done,” expressed Theismann.

“Terry’s a dear friend. He’s a great young man, a great leader. His intangibles and his value to this football team outweigh his talent, which we know is extreme. He needs to be paid. He needs to be paid right away. We need to put this issue behind us as a football team. He is one of the leaders, and he is a guy you can always count on.”

Theismann then broke into comparing McLaurin as a sort of Jerry Rice, saying, “He is as good as anybody that plays this game.”

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Joe Theismann remains one of the biggest cheerleaders for the NFL’s Washington organization. And why not? He was with the franchise 1974-1985, led the team to three straight division titles 1982-84, consecutive NFC titles 1982, 1983, and has continued to live in the area and be supportive of the only NFL for which he played.

He is right that Terry McLaurin is a great player and that his intangibles are extremely valuable to the team. McLaurin is one of the better receivers in the NFL. However, I continue to be amazed at the lack of objectivity that can sometimes rear its head when discussing McLaurin and his contract.

Terry is not another Jerry Rice. Though a very good receiver, he is not the best receiver in the NFL today. There are several who are in the top tier, and Terry, though very productive every season, is not one of the top five in the NFL.

So, please, until we know what McLaurin and his agent are asking for in the contract negotiations, why do many simplistically assume the Commanders are at fault in these negotiations?

Could it be that McLaurin’s representation is actually holding up an agreement?

However, we don’t know what the Commanders have offered to this point either. Therefore, shouldn’t more of us determine that the wiser course of action would be to wait until we hear the actual terms asked and offered, before we form an opinion and cast blame?
