Ward, Bynum, Warren highlight Indianapolis Colts best offseason moves

Of all the roster moves made this offseason by the Indianapolis Colts between free agency and the NFL draft, which three would you say are the best?

I believe this question is a relatively simple one, as we saw GM Chris Ballard take a much more aggressive approach in free agency as he reshape the Colts‘ secondary–which was a big need–and he then landed arguably the top tight end in this year’s draft class, which was another high priority position for the team.

So now that I’ve already given away the answers to the test, let’s take a look at why these three players are the Colts’ top additions in 2025.

CB Charvarius Ward

Ward is just one season removed from being an All-Pro in 2023. But going beyond his own column in the stat sheet, Ward is a very good fit for Lou Anarumo’s defense.

Ward is comfortable playing on an island and matching up with a variety of wide receiver skill sets. When a defense has a cornerback who can take away one side of the field or matchup on an opponent’s top wideout, it provides the play caller with added flexibility in how he utilizes the other defenders at the second and third levels of the defense.

S Cam Bynum

Like Ward, we can look at Bynum’s production, specifically his ability to make plays on the football, and see what kind of boost he can provide the Colts’ secondary. But along with that ball production, Bynum is a very versatile defender as well.

His past experience as a cornerback makes him comfortable operating in space, which we will see more of on the back end of this new-look defense. Bynum is also a strong run defender and is comfortable in man or zone, and can line up across the secondary–all of which makes him a good fit for Anarumo’s disguise-heavy defense.

TE Tyler Warren

The Colts need a much greater passing game presence at the tight end position, and Warren can certainly provide that. After the draft, Ballard mentioned that over the middle of the field on those short to intermediate routes is where he can be a real threat.

Along with his pass-catching abilities, Warren is versatile, able to line up across the formation, and a capable run blocker. This well-rounded skill set allows him to fill a variety of different roles, as we saw at Penn State, and that can add some unpredictability to the Colts’ offense.
