USC men's basketball freshman Alijah Arenas cleared to begin practicing with Trojans

On Wednesday morning, USC men’s basketball held another summer practice open to the media. While the majority of the Trojans’ roster was on the court, five-star freshman Alijah Arenas was still not cleared to participate.

According to head coach Eric Musselman, however, that is about to change. Per Musselman, Arenas is expected to be cleared to begin practicing with the Trojans on Thursday, less than three months after the car crash that caused him to spend nearly a week in the hospital.

Obviously, there will be a bit of an adjustment period for Arenas, who will have to get back to full speed while simultaneously adjusting to the challenges of playing college basketball and learning USC’s system. However, head coach Eric Musselman did not think that this will be a huge issue for him.

“I think he knows the offense, on paper, maybe better than anyone on our team,” Musselman said following Wednesday’s practice. “Now when he has to go live, and he’s in there, it’s a different story maybe than seeing it on paper or seeing it from the sidelines. But I would anticipate him picking it up really quick.”

If Arenas is at full speed, he has the potential to be one of the top freshmen in the country this upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how quickly he can put his health situation behind him and adjust to playing basketball at the college level.
