The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday gave an update on defensive lineman Tarron Jackson, who was taken off the field on a stretcher Sunday in the team’s final practice without pads.
Jackson was placed on IR in a roster move that also brought in defensive end Jaylon Allen. It’s not a huge surprise Allen hit the injured list after suffering a neck injury that sent him to Stanford Hospital. The extent of the ailment is unclear, but neck injuries aren’t typically something a player is going to quickly come back from. It’s likely his season is over.
The roster spot vacated by Jackson was filled by Allen, who signed a one-year deal with the 49ers. He entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Denver Broncos last year. He was released prior to final roster cuts and played in the United Football League in the Spring. Allen posted 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 10 games with the Memphis Showboats and the Arlington Renegades.
Allen steps into a defensive end group that doesn’t have a ton of certainty down the depth chart. It’s going to be a steep climb, but if he plays well in camp there’s an outside chance he could earn his way onto the 53-man roster.
