Trevor Lawrence isn’t concerned, so perhaps you shouldn’t be, either. The Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback has sported a compression sleeve on his throwing arm for a few practices, but there’s no cause for concern.
“Just a little bit of soreness,” Lawrence told reporters on the final day of mandatory minicamp, adding that the sleeve helps receive some of that. “But that’s all it is.”
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen echoed the sentiment after the first day of mandatory minicamp when the sleeve was first brought up.
In the immediate aftermath of Lawrence’s sleeve first being spotted by reporters, news winds carried the doom and gloom to aggregators and even within national media, including NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
The initial panic can be understandable. Lawrence has not been active for a full season since 2022, and played through a lingering toe injury that year. He’s missed eight games over the last two years combined due to a variety of injuries.
In 2023, Lawrence missed just one game due to a late-season shoulder injury. But he barely practiced at all during the final weeks leading up to a pedestrian performance in the season finale, ultimately missing the playoffs with a loss to the Tennessee Titans. He sustained a knee and head injury during the year, too.
In 2024, Lawrence sustained another shoulder injury, this one requiring surgery, which ultimately cost him the final five games of the season after he missed two before recovering from the ailment.
So, concern about Lawrence’s availability when he sports a sleeve or anything out of the ordinary is understandable, given his injury history. Still, that concern ought to be put on pause for now.
Trevor Lawrence explains decision to wear compression sleeve on throwing arm
Lawrence’s latest recovery began after he opted for in-season surgery in December last year. Dealing with a concussion and personal matters as the team limped to the end of the year meant Lawrence could accelerate his recovery program instead of waiting until after the season was over.
That meant, though, that the QB wouldn’t be throwing much over the next few months.
“I couldn’t tell you the last time I didn’t throw for four months,” Lawrence said, adding that he did miss months due to surgery after his final season at Clemson.
“I started throwing a couple of weeks before we started the offseason program, but then we jumped into practice and heavy volume, and I just think over time you have to adjust and got to get in shape for that,” he said. “So, just a little bit of soreness, the compression helps just relieve some of that. But that’s all it is. So, nothing I’m concerned about.”
Lawrence’s availability will continue to be closely monitored during the approximately five-week break the team will have ahead of training camp and throughout the remainder of his career.
For now, though, take a breath.
