Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, dropped the latest episode of their “New Heights” podcast on Wednesday.
Apart from having Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck as their special guest, the brothers also took the time to discuss the compelling storylines that have gripped the NFL over the past week or so.
Travis and Jason Kelce just had to talk about Shadeur Sanders dropping all the way to the fifth round of the NFL Draft. The brothers went into a discussion about “character issues” and how this may have significantly impacted Sanders’ major drop in the draft, especially considering how he was initially projected as a potential top-three pick.
Their discourse then led to Travis Kelce’s own experience of getting selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Jason Kelce just had to bring up his brother’s “marijuana thing,” wherein he got suspended for a full season during his sophomore year in Cincinnati after failing a marijuana test.
Jason Kelce argued that it was foolish for NFL teams to have judged his brother because of that one mistake.
“I just think it’s funny sometimes looking back, and there are all these concerns about Travis Kelsey, and everybody who ever knew you knew you were a great kid,” Jason Kelce said.
“You just had, like, a mess up with weed. … And then all of a sudden, teams aren’t picking you for it. Like, think about that today.”
Jason Kelce then went on to explain how this whole situation continues to blow his mind. Travis Kelce didn’t have much to say about the issue, opting to keep his thoughts to himself.
The Chiefs star did express, though, that he believes everything eventually fell into place.
“Worked out perfect,” Travis Kelce quipped.
The All-Pro tight end made it clear that he has no bad blood whatsoever, even sending a shoutout “to everybody.”
At the end of the day, the Chiefs probably would not have had the chance to scoop up Travis Kelce in the third round more than a decade ago had it not been for his suspension in college.
One could go on to say that it’s possible that the 10-time Pro Bowler would not have reached the same heights he has in his decorated career — including three Super Bowl titles — if he did not end up in Kansas City.
As Kelce intimated in his brief statement, all is well that ends well.
