Texas Tech star Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs set to go on 10-year Super Bowl hiatus if history repeats

The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for a third consecutive championship ended last season when the Philadelphia Eagles dismantled them in the Super Bowl. This disappointing finish has led to an offseason filled with uncertainty and questions about what lies ahead for the Chiefs. One positive for Kansas City is the promising wide receiver group surrounding Patrick Mahomes.

“Rashee Rice was playing like a true number one before he got hurt,” Kyle Long said on NFL on CBS. “Hollywood Brown obviously has some traits that people love to see at the receiver position. Xavier Worthy, if he can just slow down a little bit, so many of those explosive plays, he was just stepping out of bounds last year. Get him to figure out some spatial awareness, and you’re looking at maybe an A-tier receiving group.”

Still, some believe Mahomes’ supporting cast isn’t as strong as it once was, raising concerns that he may have already peaked.

“Mahomes’ supporting cast isn’t what it was, and he has thrown an AFC-low 25 interceptions while ranking below the league median in passer rating since the start of 2023,” Bleacher Report writes. “It’s possible the 29-year-old peaked a few years ago.”

Following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss after winning three titles, Fox Sports’ Emmanuel Acho believes the team could be headed for a decade-long drought if history repeats itself.

“Here’s why I suggest that,” Acho explained. “We all forget, in the midst of praising Tom Brady…the Patriots didn’t win a Super Bowl for 10 years. From 2004 to 2014, they did not win a championship. They won three, 10-year break, three. Patrick Mahomes has already won his three, are we in the midst of his 10-year hiatus?”

This season will be a defining one for Mahomes. With a strong possibility that Travis Kelce could retire after the upcoming year, the pressure is mounting. If Mahomes is truly following a trajectory similar to Brady’s, the next nine years could be long and challenging for both him and the Chiefs.
