After making its deepest run yet in the SEC softball tournament, No. 1 Texas A&M‘s chance to challenge No. 2 Oklahoma in the conference title game was canceled.
Saturday’s game will not be made up and the two have been named co-champions.
The matchup between the Aggies and Sooners was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. But due to heavy rain moving into Athens, Ga., the game was moved up to noon. The weather came sooner than expected, and the game never got began.
The grounds crew planned to remove the tarp from the field to start the game, but were stopped by officials and then coaches met, likely deciding on what to do.
Texas A&M run-ruled South Carolina 12-4 in the quarterfinals for the first program run-rule in the tournament. The Aggies also beat in-state rival Texas 14-2 in the semifinals for its first win over an opponent that wasn’t the Gamecocks. It was A&M’s first semifinal win in the SEC tournament in program history
On Sunday, the bracket for the college softball tournament will be revealed. Texas A&M holds the No. 1 spot in RPI and Oklahoma holds the No. 7 spot. Without a conference tournament champion, members of the selection committee will have to use different metrics to determine where teams are placed.
