The Houston Texans do not know when running back Joe Mixon will be available this season, only saying that they will take it “one day at a time.”

Mixon was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Monday as he deals with a foot injury. The announcement rules the 29-year-old two-time Pro Bowler out for at least for the first four weeks of the season.
No details were provided on Mixon’s health and Texans general manager Nick Caserio was noncommittal Wednesday about whether the running back would be available at all.
“We’ll see. We’ll take it one day at a time,” Caserio said. “We’ll evaluate those players after four weeks and see where they are in their progression and then make a determination.”
Mixon’s foot injury kept him out of offseason OTAs, minicamp and all of training camp. His absence on the Texans’ roster opens the door to Nick Chubb to be atop the running back depth chart ahead of Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale and Woody Marks.
After being acquired from the Cincinnati Bengals last offseason, Mixon rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns. It was the fifth time he’s reached the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season and the second time he’s scored double-digit touchdowns. He also caught 36 balls for 309 yards and one touchdown in 2024.
As of now, Mixon is eligible to return in Week 5 when the Texans take on the Baltimore Ravens.
The Texans open the 2025 NFL season on Sept. 7 with a visit to the Los Angeles Rams.
