The Washington Commanders experienced a franchise revival in 2024, returning to the playoffs and ending a decades long conference championship game drought. Jayden Daniels rise to stardom has given the Commanders a leader under center that they have not had in a long time.

Signs are pointing up in D.C. though things looked pretty sour not too long ago. Not many faces remain from those days, but star receiver Terry McLaurin experienced it first hand. Losing seasons and a scandalous owner undermined what he accomplished early in his career.

His determination has paid off and last year his brilliance shined on a bigger stage with better talent around him. McLaurin may not be the primary focus of this new era of Commanders’ football though he is a foundational piece of Washington’s future.

However, he and the Commanders have hit an impasse with regard to a contract extension. According to FOX NFL insider Jordan Schultz, McLaurin has grown frustrated with the progress toward a long term deal.

Talks have been minimal as he left voluntary workouts after an initial attendance. There is not an exact known figure for what McLaurin is looking for though it likely starts at $30 million per year.

McLaurin has certainly proven his worth, racking up 1,000 yards in each of the last five seasons. 2024 represented some of his best work, finishing with 1,096 yards on 82 catches with 13 touchdowns.

The Commanders have been uber aggressive in the offseason building around Daniels, adding Laremy Tunsil to their offensive line and wide receiver Deebo Samuel as a No. 2 to McLaurin in the passing game.

Everything about their strategy has reflected an opportunistic mindset of capitalizing on Daniels’ early years before he will likely be due his own major extension. One would think McLaurin would be a high priority to lock down his future with the team.

Nonetheless, things remain at a standstill between both sides as OTAs carry on. Mandatory minicamp begins June 10 and runs through June 12. If McLaurin remains absent from the team through those dates, he would be subject to fines.
