The Tennessee Volunteers just got a boost in their quarterback room as transfer signee Joey Aguilar edges closer to joining the team. With former starter Nico Iamaleava’s exit, the Vols had their eyes set on strengthening their QB depth. They made a solid move by landing Aguilar from UCLA Bruins via the portal, someone they believe can bring instant value to a room that also includes Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre.
The good news? Aguilar has officially graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Communication Studies. This graduation clears the way for a smoother transition to Tennessee.
As reported, Aguilar is expected to be on campus by mid-to-late May, possibly even early June, and that can’t come soon enough for head coach Josh Heupel and the Volunteers.
While completing his academic obligations, Aguilar has already started getting familiar with the Vols’ system through Zoom sessions with Tennessee coaches. That early virtual work shows how serious both sides are about getting him up to speed.

Aguilar is coming off a solid 2024 season with the App State Mountaineers, where he added 3,003 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Known for his strong arm and confident play, he’s expected to bring serious competition to the room and potentially spark the Vols’ offense under Heupel’s fast-paced system.
As Aguilar gears up to arrive in Knoxville, the focus shifts to how quickly he can build chemistry with the team and grasp the offense. The Volunteers are hopeful that this next chapter marks a strong step forward for both Aguilar and their 2025 campaign.
