Steelers fans finally have their answer about the short-term future of rookie QB Will Howard — he’s heading to Injured Reserve.
On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reported that Howard will be placed on IR, though the Steelers may not do so immediately, per his sources.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Howard was never expected to contribute right away — and his development under Aaron Rodgers’ mentorship this upcoming season hasn’t changed.
What makes the report more surprising is HC Mike Tomlin’s recent update on Howard’s broken finger, claiming he was “moving in the right direction toward full participation soon.”
Howard’s potential placement on Injured Reserve clears space for QB Skylar Thompson, who was listed as the QB4 on Pittsburgh’s unofficial depth chart before shocking the NFL world with an MVP-like performance over the past three preseason contests.
