After starting the 2024 NFL season 10-3, Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers finished the year losing five straight, falling to the Ravens in the Wild Card round.
Now, the Steelers have undergone some major changes during the offseason, but have their sights set on former Jets and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Both of Pittsburgh’s starting quarterbacks departed for other teams as Russell Wilson signed with the New York Giants and Justin Fields joined the Jets. Starting running back Najee Harris also left for the Chargers.
On Wednesday, the Steelers also traded away their top receiver from the last two seasons, George Pickens, sending him to the Cowboys for a couple of picks.
Even with the acquisition of Seahawks pass catcher DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh has been left with some serious holes on offense, ones that may sway Rodgers away from the team.
However, with just one top-tier receiver on the roster, the Steelers could attempt to fill that void with another trade.
According to NBC Sports’ Mike Florio, Pittsburgh is “in play” to acquire Jets receiver Allen Lazard, someone who has played alongside Rodgers since his 2018 rookie season in Green Bay.
Despite pursuing a preferred pass catcher for Rodgers, the Steelers have still made no progress on the four-time NFL MVP, according to ESPN’s Peter Schrager.
“Aaron Rodgers has been very up front with the Steelers, and he was very up front with the Giants,” Schrager said on Thursday’s edition of “The Pat McAfee Show.” “The Steelers are willing to wait, and I don’t think Pittsburgh knows more now than they did before the draft.”

During the 2025 NFL Draft, Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II revealed a positive update on Rodgers, one that has not changed since.
“I do think we may get word soon, obviously, with things starting to crank up here with the offseason program, etc,” Rooney said during the draft. “If he’s coming, [we] would like to get him here soon for some of that.”
Still, Pittsburgh fans may have to wait a little longer to find out who their quarterback will be for the 2025 NFL season.
