LAS VEGAS — The Philadelphia 76ers continued the summer league on Saturday with a matchup with the Charlotte Hornets. Looking to continue moving forward with the growth and development of the younger pieces, the Sixers had some good moments in this one, but they ultimately fell short 96-94.
The Sixers received 24 points and five rebounds out of Judah Mintz as he continues to put on a strong effort in terms of his scoring. Dominick Barlow added 19 points and nine rebounds while Justin Edwards had 14 points and Adem Bona had eight points and six rebounds for Philadelphia. Rookie Johni Broome had 10 points.
Here are some thoughts on the Sixers after the loss to the Hornets:
Dominick Barlow
There is a lot to like about Barlow. He has a lot of size, he’s bouncy, and has a good skill on how to rebound the ball. He had some good moments in this one on both ends of the floor and one has to believe the Sixers will give him a great chance to earn a roster spot out of camp. He was aggressive on the glass, including on the offensive side of things, and had a soft touch around the basket. He even stepped out and knocked down a triple as the big man showed off his skill.
Hunter Sallis
Getting a start in this one, the undrafted rookie was the de facto point guard in this one. He had some issues at times getting the Sixers into their offense, but he has some real athleticism and has a knack for getting to his spots on the floor on the offensive end. The Sixers should explore what Sallis can do with the ball in his hands more often. He had some impressive assists in this one.
Adem Bona
The big man had some issues with turnovers in this one, but he continues to be a vocal leader out on the floor. It is a little surprising that he isn’t dominating in this environment when considering his vast skills as a rebounder and in the paint, but the Sixers have to like him continuing to talk and making sure the Sixers are in their spots.
Justin Edwards
Another player who hasn’t dominated in this environment, Edwards had another tough outing in terms of his shot. He was able to get good looks, but was unable to convert on them and the Sixers have to find a way to get him going on the offensive end and help him find a rhythm. He had a big second half–which is really the best half of his summer league career, period–which is something he needs to build on.
Johni Broome
The rookie big man knocked down another triple which continues to be a big help for both him and the Sixers. He deserves a lot of credit for being able to showoff that jumper. If he can continue to knock that shot down, then he will be able to earn a spot on the roster.
Judah Mintz
Once again, Mintz showed off an ability to get into the paint and finish through contact as well as get to the foul line. He’s a physical player who can produce on the offensive end when given the opportunity. The Sixers likely don’t have a path for him to move forward due to the logjam at the guard spot, but he can play in this league.
