Sixers provide encouraging update on VJ Edgecombe ahead of Wizards game

LAS VEGAS — The Philadelphia 76ers got back to work on Monday in Las Vegas for another summer league practice as they continue to work through the Vegas circuit in an effort to improve and grow as young players get the court time they need. They will take on the Washington Wizards in their next summer league game on Tuesday.

One player who has not played since July 5 due to a left thumb sprain is rookie VJ Edgecombe. The No. 3 overall pick began his summer league with a bang in Salt Lake City as he went for 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. He was terrific, but suffered the injury and the Sixers have not seen him since.

However, there was an encouraging update on Monday when the Sixers announced that Edgecombe was a full participant in practice. Summer league coach TJ DiLeo was impressed with what he saw.

“He looked great today,” DiLeo beamed. “He had a good day. The stuff we saw in the first game. He really pushed our pace. He got into the paint, all that, and he shared the ball really well today as well making plays for himself and others. So I like what I saw today.”

The Sixers will be looking for Edgecombe to continue getting healthy and grow as a player. He has such a bright future and they do not want to rush the prized rookie to a return to the floor, but Philadelphia will be looking to get him back on track.

In terms of a minutes restriction, DiLeo isn’t sure of all of that if Edgecombe can play.

“I’ll take all advice from medical on with what we’re doing,” DiLeo explained. “I mean, obviously he hasn’t played in the game for, what, a week or eight days, but, like, we’ll take all that into account. We’ll keep an eye on him out there, see how his wind is. I mean, we’ll wait to hear from medical whether he’s a go or not, and wait to hear on any other limitations.”

The Sixers will take on the Wizards on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. EDT.
