Ruben Amorim is on a tough quest to turn things around at Manchester United after the disastrous 2024-25 campaign. However, Amorim looks confident in his abilities to turn the tides for the Red Devils, with the Portuguese manager eager to revamp his squad during the ongoing transfer window.

While United are in dire need of changes to their squad, Amorim is keen on finding a permanent solution for the problem between the sticks. Ever since his move from Inter Milan, the Cameroonian has failed to impress, with his performance a constant headache for Amorim and his predecessors.

Manchester United have been in hunt for a top goalkeeper and were reportedly interested in securing the services of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez. The World Cup winning goalkeeper despite his stature has fallen out of favor with Villa head coach Unai Emery, with the Spaniard open to having him leave for a sensible fee.

Jim Ratcliffe blocks Amorim over Emiliano Martinez

While Amorim was keen on signing Martinez from Villa on a transfer this summer, the manager has been reportedly blocked by team owner Jim Ratcliffe. The INEOS owner following his takeover of the team has been pretty strict over the team’s finances with his severe cost cutting measures.

According to reports, Ratcliffe despite Martinez’s stature has blocked the transfer citing the club’s budget constraints alongside the Argentine’s hefty $268,000/week salary. Considering Andre Onana is currently on half the wage of what Martinez earns, it’s understandable how Ratcliffe does not want the deal to go through.

While the decision makes sense from a financial standpoint, this leaves Manchester United back on square one with their goalkeeper issue. It will be interesting to see if Ruben Amorim retains his trust on Andre Onana or turns his attention to a different shot stopper available in the market.
