The Seattle Seahawks are entering the 2025 NFL draft with several holes across their offensive line. Expect general manager John Schneider to target multiple offensive linemen with his five selections in the opening 100 picks. The Seahawks will take new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak into account when drafting blockers.
Kubiak is bringing his zone-based rushing scheme to Seattle. It represents a big change from last year’s system, which saw OC Ryan Grubb oversee a gap/power scheme. As the New Orleans Saints‘ offensive coordinator last season, Kubiak’s offense ran the second-highest percentage of outside zone runs in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Research.
Kubiak’s father Gary Kubiak adopted the zone-based rushing scheme from one of its forefathers, Mike Shanahan in the 1990s. Furthermore, Seattle’s new play-caller worked under Shanahan’s son, Kyle Shanahan, in San Francisco. Outside zone will be Seattle’s bread and butter.
“It’s important to establish a way of doing business here,” Kubiak said back in February. “We’re going to start with that being an outside zone, but obviously we’re going to incorporate gap schemes, inside zones, pin and pull.”
Prioritizing athletes is a must when projecting which offensive linemen best suit the outside zone scheme. Think Grey Zabel, the North Dakota State interior offensive linemen who has been a popular mock-draft selection for the Seahawks. For example, Alabama’s Tyler Booker is a powerful guard prospect who does not fit an athletic system.
When stacking their draft board, the Seahawks will view athletic linemen more favorably than powerful ones who struggle to move in space. Drafting linemen that fit Kubiak’s system is imperative to fixing the offensive line. The Seahawks will target athletic linemen during the 2025 NFL draft.
