Seager’s appendicitis brings Dylan Moore to Texas

I was out of town this past weekend for the 30th wedding anniversary of long-time friends, and my blogging was very sparse. As a result, I am only now posting about the Texas Rangers purchasing the contract of veteran Dylan Moore to take the place of Corey Seager, who landed on the 10 day injured list with appendicitis. Evan Carter was shifted to the 60 day injured list to open up a 40 man roster spot for Moore.

Seager having to go on the i.l. with appendicitis I did write about on Thursday, when the news broke, and the best that we can hope for is that he returns in the relatively near future.

The fact that Dylan Moore is the guy replacing Seager on the active roster is weird and serendipitous, though. Released by the Mariners just last week, Texas signed Moore to a minor league deal to be depth at Round Rock, but then almost immediately ended up summoning him to the big leagues.

Moore was originally a Texas Rangers’ draft pick, selected in the 7th round of the Rangers’ bizarre 2015 MLB Draft. That was the Dillon Tate draft, which saw the Rangers splurge big on Tate, Eric Jenkins and Michael Matuella in the first three rounds. Moore was a senior sign out of Central Florida, and was one of a number of later round picks who made the majors, including Jacob Lemoine, Tyler Ferguson, Pete Fairbanks, Scott Heineman, Curtis Terry, Tyler Phillips, Demarcus Evans, Jeffrey Springs and CD Pelham.

Moore was traded to the Braves in August, 2016, in a three way deal that sent Jeff Francoeur to the Marlins and landed the Rangers’ international bonus money from both Miami and Atlanta. He was released in the spring of 2018, signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, became a free agent that offseason, signed with the Seattle Mariners, and then began an improbable six-plus year run as productive utility player for Seattle. He slashed .205/.310/.381 during his time with Seattle, played every position except catcher, won a Gold Glove in 2024, and accumulated 7.2 bWAR there.

And now, having been released during a disappointing 2025 campaign, he returns to the team that drafted him, and joins Rowdy Tellez as Mariners castoffs who have been scooped up by a Rangers team looking for veteran help due to injuries.

Baseball is weird that way.
