World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler picked up his fourth win of 2025 over the past weekend at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

The victory did a lot of things for Scheffler as he has now completed three out of the four legs for the grand slam, brought home $3 million in prize money and was also able to prove one of his most famous doubters wrong.

Back in March, former world No. 2 golfer Phil Mickelson fired off what he called a “hot take.”

Phil Mickelson’s Viral Scottie Scheffler Prediction

“Here’s a hot take,” Mickelson wrote in March. “Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so.”

The post has nearly six million views on X, and when appearing on Barstool’s “Pardon My Take,” Scheffler was asked about Mickelson’s post. While he could have been sour about it, he seemed to enjoy the sentiment from the famous lefty golfer.

“It was a great tweet,” Scheffler said. “It was a great tweet.”

Barstool’s “Big Cat” suggested that Mickelson only added the Ryder Cup part to ensure he didn’t root against America, which Scheffler confirmed he believed as well.

“I would agree with that,” Scheffler said. “I think that’s what he was trying to say but you can’t say that America is going to lose the Ryder Cup when you’re an American. So he kind of threw in that little cookie there at the end, because Phil’s not dumb.”

Although Mickelson could have played it off as he was joking, he did eat some crow following Scheffler’s victory, expressing how well he played en route to shooting 17-under.

In a year where Scheffler was predicted to struggle, he has four wins and has earned over $19 million. Not too shabby for someone who wasn’t supposed to win until September.
