The New Orleans Saints had a bit of worry during training camp on Wednesday. Tight end Juwan Johnson, who signed a three-year contract this offseason, is now dealing with a groin injury.

Juwan Johnson quickly returns to practice after injury scare

Johnson left practice on Wednesday, creating some stirring within the fan base. Luckily, it sounds like Johnson avoided anything major. The veteran tight end actually suited up for practice on Thursday as well.

Johnson projects as one of the top pass catchers for Kellen Moore’s offense in New Orleans. The young head coach has mentioned Johnson as a notable piece to the unit on multiple occasions this offseason. He understood Johnson’s skillset when the team went after him to bring him back in free agency.

Moore’s offense has consistently found ways to get tight ends involved in the past. Dallas Goedert was impressive when healthy when Moore was the OC for the Philadelphia Eagles. Moore’s scheme does show plenty of looks with multiple TEs one the field at once, so the depth is meaningful in New Orleans.

Of course, the Saints won’t try to rush Johnson back to a full worked immediately. A groin injury is one that can be re-injured fairly easily when you consider the sort of movements that a tight end like him is making on a consistent basis. The Saints are dealing with injuries along their TE depth chart, too. Foster Moreau is recovering from a season-ending injury from last season – as is Taysom Hill. With that, the depth is unproven for New Orleans as of now.

The Saints showed interest in veteran TE Noah Fant earlier this week, but he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. There seems to be a chance that they add another vet option at the position before the regular season begins for the Saints. Only time will tell.
