The betting lines for this week’s Rutgers football game against Miami (OH) have opened, and the Scarlet Knights are 14.5-point favorites over the Redhawks, according to Fanduel.
Last week, Rutgers played a team from the MAC, the Ohio Bobcats, in a game where the Knights pulled off a close 34-31 win. Rutgers’ game against the Bobcats showed many cracks in the Knights’ defensive structure, especially when it came to the pass defense. Ohio quarterback Parker Navarro was routinely able to find open receivers while also finding plenty of room to scramble with little pressure coming from Rutgers’ defensive line, leading to Ohio outgaining Rutgers 440 yards to 399.
Rutgers’ offense, on the other hand, especially the passing game, showed a lot of promise. Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis tossed the ball for 252 yards and two touchdowns, with one of those scores coming on a 54-yard pass to wide receiver DT Sheffield.
Miami (OH), another MAC team, faced off against another Big Ten team, Wisconsin, last week, falling 17-0. The Badgers were able to suffocate the Redhawks’ offense, allowing no third-down conversions, forcing two turnovers, and shutting out Miami (OH) on the road to the victory. Despite the three-score win, all was not well for the Badgers. The Miami (OH) defense did not let Wisconsin run away with the game, keeping the Badgers in check for most of the contest. The Redhawk defense stood tall despite the offense’s struggles, allowing only 353 total yards, forcing one turnover, and holding the Badgers to just three points after 30 minutes of play. According to Steve Helwick of SBNation’s Hustle Belt, it has always been Miami (OH)‘s philosophy to win ugly, defensive football games. With Rutgers’ offense showing more potential out of the two units, this matchup will be a contest between the two strongest points on both of these teams.
The game between Rutgers and Miami (OH) will take place on September 6 at SHI Stadium, with the kickoff being at 3:30.
