Rookie QB Quinn Ewers Earns Praise From Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Another day, another impressive performance by Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers.
The Dolphins took a chance on Ewers with the No. 231 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Many NFL Draft analysts expected Ewers to be taken off the board in the third or fourth round and his fall was one of the biggest surprises of the draft.
Ewers could potentially take a similar path as San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who was “Mr. Irrelevant” with the No. 262 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and just signed a five-year, $265 million deal this offseason. Purdy was the No. 3 quarterback on San Francisco’s depth chart as a rookie before being thrust into a starting role due to injuries.
The former Texas star is competing with Zach Wilson this offseason for the backup quarterback role behind starter Tua Tagovailoa. Due to Tagovailoa’s injury history, Ewers could find himself thrown into the starting role sooner rather than later.
Fortunately for Miami, Ewers has had an impressive start to Dolphins training camp with several viral throws surfacing on social media. He was even named the star of the show for Miami’s third practice. The praise continued to roll in on Monday from Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
“Quinn Ewers is doing great,” McDaniel said. “He has a personality that players gravitate to.”

In three years as the starter for the Longhorns, Ewers threw for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns. He led Texas to back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinals. If he can stay healthy, the sky is the limit for his professional career.
