Some Philadelphia Phillies fans have been upset with how Trea Turner has swung the bat over the past few years since signing a massive 11-year, $300 million deal.
If Philadelphia fans are upset about what Turner has done throughout the first three years in a Phillies Jersey, it’s tough to imagine what they might feel when he’s playing in 2033.
However, the Phillies had to do what they had to do. Turner was one of the top players on the market when he was a free agent, and for a Philadelphia team that was built to win, and still is, it was the right move.
For Turner, the hope is for him to be better offensively, and the past 15 games have suggested that he’ll be more than fine.
He’s currently hitting 301 for the season with a 108 OPS+ and six doubles. His power numbers are down, hitting just one home run after hitting 21 and 26 in his first two seasons in Philadelphia, but if those improve, he might be worth this massive extension.
Speaking to reporters before the game, skipper Rob Thomson gave him the ultimate praise, saying he seems to get a hit every night.
“Trea seems like — knock on wood — he gets at least a base hit every night,” he said, per the Daily Gazette.
On Wednesday, Turner responded to Thomson’s comments with a massive game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Phillies needed a big win against the Rays to continue their recent hot stretch, and Turner provided just that, going 2-4 with a home run and two RBI.
