West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez addressed the media following the season opening match up against Robert Morris and WVSports.com provides a summary of what was said.
–Rodriguez doesn’t know if he’s ever had or seen three fumbles in four plays. They didn’t play well in the first half and West Virginia was beating West Virginia. The second half went like it should have. They’ll take the win and learn from it but there’s a lot of things to clean up and fix. They’ll grow from it and see what happens next.
–The crowd was unbelievable. Great crowd dressed in gold and into the game. He thought that West Virginia fans showed up today on the man trip, tailgating and during the game. They didn’t do a lot of stuff and were being generic and basic especially after they got a lead in the second half. The fumble part he thought maybe they should have had a few more live practices.
–Cam Vaughn is a great athlete and a great competitor. He’s glad they took a deep shot.
–Nicco Marchiol was consistent and understood. He is a competitive guy that will do what he needs to do to win the game. The expectation is that they will continue to get better.
–The defense only gave up two third and 10s, but Robert Morris couldn’t run the ball. He felt the entire time the defense was going to be OK.
–They didn’t get enough three and outs early and had two or three turnovers which allowed them to rest and that’s why they couldn’t get the tempo how they wanted to.
–When Jaylen Henderson came in he ran well and the two young guys are really talented guys that have shown some stuff. They have to get these young guys ready to play.
–Rodriguez told his team at halftime they have to take care of the football and play a little smarter.
–Rodriguez was proud that there as no panic at halftime in the locker room. The players didn’t panic and think what do we do now.
–Rodriguez felt they were physical at times but he wants to watch the film to see how the offensive line fared and how physical they were.
–Rodriguez didn’t feel they got enough players in today. Had they played better in the first two quarters they would have played more people but that was disappointing that they didn’t get as many people in there.
–Jahiem White ran hard, but he’s a little disappointed they didn’t get him loose for some bigger runs. They didn’t get him as many explosive plays today.
–Rodriguez said that they might go live for them to address the fumbles in practice. He wants to watch the tape in order to see how those occurred.
–Rodriguez thought that Cam Vaughn was a power four player when he recruited him at Jacksonville State. He’s a competitive guy and it’s important to him.
–Rodriguez didn’t soak it up as much as he thought. He is appreciative of the opportunity to come back. He has the mission to build the best program in America and while they have a long way to go he’s excited to do that. There were probably a little more nerves because there were so many new faces.
–West Virginia quarterback Max Brown tweaked his hamstring so he didn’t dress.
