Report: Saints 'kicked the tires' on recently-released veteran quarterback Easton Stick

All eyes are on the top of the New Orleans Saints depth chart at quarterback, but some changes are coming throughout the unit. We don’t know if it’ll be Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough starting in Week 1. Beyond that, we don’t know who is backing them up. The Saints waived third-year pro Jake Haener on Tuesday, and while he has an offer on the table to remain on the practice squad, he might prefer to go looking for greener pastures outside New Orleans.

One name to watch: Easton Stick. The former North Dakota State standout was coached by Kellen Moore and Doug Nussmeier (the Saints’ first-year head coach and offensive coordinator) on the Los Angeles Chargers just a few years ago, and he signed with the Atlanta Falcons earlier this offseason. Atlanta cut him, too, so now he’s a free agent again. NewOrleans.Football’s Mike Triplett reported that the Saints “at least kicked the tires on” signing Stick before he went to the Falcons, so maybe they circle back to him.

Stick has been in the league since 2019, and he started four games with Moore calling plays for him back in 2023. So he could offer more as a backup with real game experience than Haener. Teams are allowed to keep six players with more than two accrued seasons on their practice squads (Stick has six of them), so this might make sense. Stay tuned.
