Report Reveals 'Surprise' In Commanders Contract Talks with Terry McLaurin

Report Reveals ‘Surprise’ In Commanders Contract Talks with Terry McLaurin originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Washington Commanders and Terry McLaurin seem to be far apart in talks regarding a new contract extension … low-lighted by his holdout from the team’s offseason workouts.

We believe that Washington is trying to wrap its around what could be a $30 million APY contract. … but we also believe the ESPN report that states they want Terry to be a “Commander for Life.”

So how to settle it all?

One path? Neither side should be “surprised” at the other’s position.

There is speculation that the franchise could trade Terry or that this saga could drag on into the season; we buy neither of those suggestions.

But we do wonder how a national outlet could report that there is “surprise at how the situation has arrived at this point.”

Really?

What’s the surprise? Washington has a desire to keep McLaurin but not to pay him like a top-10 receiver. And McLaurin, at age 29, knows this is his last chance at a big bite of the contractual apple.

Both sides have legitimate points. So frankly, if the Commanders front office is somehow “surprised” that McLaurin thinks he is worth $30 million a year after coming off a career-high 13 touchdowns season?

That’s naive of the Commanders front office.

McLaurin finally has a quarterback in Jayden Daniels who can get him the ball consistently and allow him to put up numbers worthy of what a $30 million wide receiver makes. Meanwhile, the Commanders finally have a team that when all of its pieces are in place can contend for a Super Bowl.

As always, the devil can be in the details. How many years? How big a guarantee? How escapable can the deal be constructed to be?

McLaurin, to this fan base, is a guy who, even when the chips were down, always showed up.

And now, for a franchise deemed to be on the cusp of a Super Bowl? There should be no “surprises” in terms of what everybody wants.

And there shouldn’t be too many more delays in getting that done, either.
