West Virginia has officially turned the page at quarterback. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has named Nicco Marchiol the Mountaineers’ starter heading into the 2025 season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Marchiol, who backed up Garrett Greene the past two years, won the competition over Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson and Charlotte transfer Max Brown. The decision gives WVU a familiar face at QB1 as Rodriguez begins his second stint in Morgantown.
The redshirt junior brings experience to the role with 20 appearances and three career starts, all wins in Big 12 play against Texas Tech, Arizona, and Cincinnati. In those outings, Marchiol completed 66.3 percent of his passes for an average of 144 yards per game while throwing four touchdowns. Across his career, he has thrown for 742 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions, while also rushing for 285 yards and three scores.
Henderson, who started four games during his career at Fresno State and Texas A&M, and Brown, who saw time at Florida and Charlotte, will provide depth behind Marchiol this fall.
Rodriguez’s first run as WVU’s head coach from 2001 to 2007 featured standout quarterback play from Rasheed Marshall and Pat White. Now, Marchiol gets the first shot to lead the Mountaineers in this new era as they open the season against Robert Morris later today.
