Report: Former Indianapolis Colts kicker signs with Washington Commanders

Former Indianapolis Colts’ kicker Matt Gay is reportedly signing with the Washington Commanders, according to Adam Schefter. This is a one-year deal for Gay.

As a corresponding move to make room for Gay, Washington is releasing kicker Zane Gonzalez.

The Colts released Gay prior to the NFL draft, just two years after signing him to what was the largest free agent kicker deal in league history.

During his two seasons with the Colts, Gay was very steady from inside 50 yards, missing only three attempts. However, from 50-plus yards, he struggled, finishing his Colts’ career going 11-for-22 on such attempts, per PFF.

But despite some ups and downs, as GM Chris Ballard described, the decision to move on from Gay was more so about second-year kicker Spencer Shrader, whom the Colts think very highly of.

“Matt is a good kicker, he’s still a good kicker,” Ballard said via the team site. “Matt is still going to be a good kicker in this league. I think a lot of it had to do with Spencer. Having Spencer last year gave us a real insight to his talent level.”

At the time, releasing Gay saved the Colts $2.75 million in salary cap space for the 2025 NFL season.
