Reds Receive Unfortunate Hunter Greene News After Loss to Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Right-handed starter Hunter Greene is in his fourth major-league season with the Cincinnati Reds. He was drafted second overall in the 2017 MLB Draft and made his big-league debut in 2022.
In his first two seasons, Greene struggled. As a rookie in 2022, he posted a 4.44 ERA over 24 starts, going 5–13. In 2023, his ERA climbed to 4.82 in 22 starts, and he finished with a 4–7 record.
Greene broke out in 2024, establishing himself among baseball’s elite. He earned his first All-Star selection, finished eighth in Cy Young voting, and lowered his ERA by more than two full runs to 2.75.
This season, Greene was off to another great start but a recurring groin injury has sidelined him. He first landed on the injured list in May with a right groin strain, and when he aggravated it in his third start back on June 3, he was placed back on the IL on June 4.
On Monday, the Reds received an update that Greene’s scheduled rehab start on Tuesday had been pushed back after he reported continued discomfort in his injured groin and underwent an MRI.

He felt tightness “in that same area,” then added, “I’ll take it day by day,” the 25-year-old right-hander said, per Charlie Goldsmith.
Greene kept up the high standard he set in 2024, posting a 2.72 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 11 starts this season.
The setback is a significant blow to the Reds’ playoff push. Cincinnati sits at 46–44, 2.5 games back of the third wild card spot, and losing their ace for an extended stretch could severely hinder their bid for October baseball.
