Randy Moss reveals pre-game conversation with Bill Belichick, expecations for UNC

ESPN pulled out all the stops for the debut of Bill Belichick at North Carolina. Multiple former players joined the pregame set in Chapel Hill, including legendary wide receiver Randy Moss. He and Belichick found an immense amount of success with the New England Patriots, including the perfect 16-0 regular season in 2007.

Moss was able to speak to his former coach before the game, asking Belichick what he is most excited about coaching in the college ranks. As usual, being around people who love football is what Belichick loves more than anything.

“I asked Coach Belichick before the game — What was one of the biggest things that he was excited for going back to college and coaching these young guys?” Moss said. “He was like ‘The thirst for knowledge and the understanding of football games.’ Like I said. I’m excited to see what he pours on this field tonight.”

North Carolina has a completely revamped roster from a year ago. Belichick, alongside general manager Michael Lombardi, is hoping to turn things around quickly for the Tar Heels. Still, a new culture is being established in Chapel Hill as they phase out of the second edition of the Mack Brown era.

Possibly something similar to what Moss experienced while in New England. Plenty of former players remember the lessons of Belichick during their time with the Patriots franchise. Moss knows his biggest takeaway is one that the group of players at North Carolina will learn as well.

“One thing that really stood out to me when I became a Patriot is how much he demanded how smart you have to be as a player,” Moss said on ESPN. “How tough you have to be as a player. And No. 3, could he count on you? Are you a dependable type of player? … That’s the one thing I know that won’t change. His expectation, what he expects from his players tonight. Teaching situational football, something I will never forget about coach because he made me go back to school, understanding how to play the game in certain situations.”

Things get underway Monday night as North Carolina plays host to TCU. Being the lone college football game of the evening, the entire country will be watching. In a year where there are plenty of storylines, how Belichick performs might be the most compelling. Plenty out there will be cheering for his success, including Moss.
