Raiders are officially in the market for a quarterback

With the final roster cuts just a few days away, the Raiders biggest decision at quarterback was whether to keep two or three on the roster. They had Geno Smith as the starter, Aidan O’Connell as the expected primary backup, and rookie Cam Miller as the decision whether to keep him on the roster or put him on the practice squad.

Now the problem is much bigger.

Aidan O’Connell came into Saturday night’s game on the second drive and took a strip sack while he was in the act of throwing. He left the field a short time later and headed for the locker room clutching his hand. A short time later, X-rays revealed O’Connell broke his wrist as head coach Pete Carroll revealed after the game.

“He fractured his wrist,” Carroll said of O’Connell. “He’s hurt. It’s going to be a while. He’ll have to get that fixed, so that’s a big blow for us.”

Carroll added that O’Connell’s injury timeline puts him out for six to eight weeks. This means the Raiders suddenly have two quarterbacks instead of three. But it’s not just that. It’s that they simply can’t go into the season with sixth round rookie Cam Miller a snap away from entering the game.

Miller struggled mightily the past two preseason games, clearly looking like he is a long ways away from being ready for the big time. Not to say Aidan O’Connell and his four turnover this preseason was instilling much confidence, but with him now gone, they have no choice.

The Raiders are immediately in the market for a quarterback. Whether that means in trade, off waivers, or off the street. They have no choice.

Time to get to work trying to find at least one viable backup for Geno Smith and then get him up to speed in the next two weeks.
