Organizers of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa have released the final revised set of route maps for the July 20-26 ride.
RAGBRAI 52 will trek 406 miles over seven days from Orange City to Guttenberg, with overnight stops in Milford, Estherville, Forest City, Iowa Falls, Cedar Falls and Oelwein. It will be the second-shortest RAGBRAI and the sixth flattest, with just 10,487 feet of climb.
Also being released Friday, June 27, are GPX maps for bike computers, downloadable from the RAGBRAI website.
Organizers announced the overnight towns in January and released the full route and daily maps in April. But each year the RAGBRAI staff makes changes to the route, finalizing the maps in late June or early July after a route inspection ride.
Still part of the plan: For the first time, RAGBRAI will leave Iowa’s borders on the second-day ride from Milford to Estherville, veering for 15 miles through Minnesota with a stop at Brown County Park between two of Minnesota’s famous 10,000 lakes.
RAGBRAI will also have optional gravel sections on each day for the second straight year.
Philip Joens has ridden parts of 19 RAGBRAIs. He has completed the river-to-river trek eight times. He covers retail and real estate for the Des Moines Register and can be reached at 515-284-8184 or at pjoens@registermedia.com.
