President Trump rips owners on Shedeur Sanders' NFL draft slide; Deion Sanders the issue?

The 2025 NFL Draft re-opens with Day 2 at 4 p.m. MST (7 p.m. Eastern time), and there continues to be a troubling trend.

It involves former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his dramatic slide all the way out of the first round on Thursday, April 24. I wrote a column on April 23 on why the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, also Shedeur’s college coach, is such a lightning rod for (undeserved) controversy.

No less an authority than President Donald Trump weighed in a couple of hours before Round 2, calling NFL owners stupid in a Truth Social post for not selecting the younger Sanders.

As I explained in my column, the problem surrounding Shedeur Sanders likely stems from the simple fact that his father is “Prime Time” and that comes with some perceived baggage, fair or not. Personally, I think NFL teams put too much value in the quarterback position for there to be any perceived, league-wide hatchet-job attack.

It is quite possible Sanders goes in the second round, perhaps as high as pick No. 33 with the first selection to the Browns, who also pick at No. 36. Then again, ESPN insider Adam Schefter speculated on April 25 that the quarterback could slip all the way into Round 3, and he floated the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys as potential landing spots.
