Jul. 29—CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. — Plankinton secured a spot in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Tuesday night with a 13-3, seven-inning win over Wessington Springs in the District 3B tournament at Greig Field.
The Bankers scored five runs in the first inning, including a two-run single by Thomas Stange, who finished with three hits. Blaine Bohr had two hits, and Hunter Pranger and Kane Knudson each had two RBIs for Plankinton.
Devin Mehlhaff was sharp for Plankinton in earning the pitching victory. He threw seven innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out four.
Mason Schelske took the loss for the Owls, yielding eight hits and nine runs (four earned) in three innings. Camden Jost and Drew Olinger each had two hits for Wessington Springs, with Trevor Kenobbie and Schelske each driving in a run.
The Bankers take a 9-7 record into the Class B state tournament, which begins on Aug. 6 in Brandon. They join Burke and Kimball/White Lake — the two participants in Wednesday’s district championship game — as qualifiers to the state tournament from the Pony Hills League.
Wessington Springs (6-12) will play on Thursday in the last-chance game in District 3B to claim the final state tournament berth. They will face the loser of Tuesday’s Colome/Four Corners game at 7:30 p.m. in Chamberlain.
