PIAA 2A boys lacrosse: Twin Valley shuts out Lampeter-Strasburg to advance

It’s been just over two weeks since Twin Valley and Lampeter-Strasburg faced off in the District 3 Class 2A semifinals, a game the Pioneers won 9-7 to advance to the championship.

This time, the Raiders got their revenge, defeating the Pioneers 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Exeter High School in Reiffton in the PIAA Class 2A boys lacrosse quarterfinals.

“The first time we played, we made too many mental mistakes,” coach Andrew Doupe said. “We gave up three goals with less than 20 seconds in the first, second, and third quarters. We just weren’t firing on all cylinders. They’re a heck of a team. They executed that day. Today felt like it was our job a little bit more to execute. So, just got a couple more breaks and the effort. Our guys came up firing from the first whistle and never let up.”

Twin Valley came off a narrow 9-8 first-round victory over Devon Prep and carried that same mindset into their matchup with Lampeter-Strasburg.

“Preparation was different,” goalie Dylan Corro said of the rematch. “I feel like everybody was dialed in, wanting this one back. It was just important to us.”

Twin Valley (19-3) came out strong and made an early statement when Colin Gallagher scored off a Drew Engle assist just over a minute into the game.

Familiar with each other, the Raiders asserted themselves defensively in the first quarter, completely shutting down the Pioneers’ offense.

A theme that would continue for all 48 minutes.

At the 6:50 mark, Engle caught the ball about 30 yards from the goal and, with a full head of steam, powered through the Pioneers’ defense to score the game’s second goal.

Lampeter-Strasburg (18-4) had several close-range misses as the Raiders continued to apply relentless pressure.

“The kids played great,” Doupe said of his defense. “They played as a unit. They supported each other. They got scrappy on ground balls. They gave our offense the opportunities it needed to go win this game. We really didn’t have too many breakdowns, and when we did, Dylan made amazing saves to keep that number at zero, which is, to a team like that, just unbelievable.”

With two minutes remaining, Cooper Glass scooped up a loose ball near the goal. Goalie Cole Beiler attempted to make the save but was out of position, allowing Glass to score and extend the lead to 3-0.

After a gloomy, rainy start, the sun broke through early in the second half, creating beautiful playing conditions.

The phenomenal defense on both sides continued into the second quarter, but the Raiders still managed to find the back of the net.

Gallagher scored his second goal, assisted by Keenan Munn.

Both Lampeter-Strasburg players and fans appeared in disbelief, struggling to get anything going.

Late in the second quarter, things began to get chippy as Pioneers’ Keegan Curtis leveled Munn, knocking his helmet straight off.

With under a minute left in the half, the Pioneers moved the ball around in Raiders’ territory and had a great look on the net, but goalie Dylan Corros made a fantastic save that quickly turned defense into offense.

The Raiders raced down the field as Gallagher completed a first-half hat trick, assisted by Engle, with just 19 seconds remaining.

“We were pushing fast breaks, moving the ball again in open space, which allowed opportunities for good shots,” Gallagher said of the Raiders’ offensive success.

Twin Valley held a 5-0 lead at halftime as their defense didn’t budge in the second half.

Both teams had limited possessions in the third quarter, with neither able to break through on offense.

Just when it seemed the quarter would end scoreless, the Raiders’ offense struck again.

With 3:04 remaining, Glass scored by bouncing the ball past Beiler.

The Raiders didn’t take long to strike again for their seventh goal, as Engle scored his second before the end of the third quarter, which proved to be the last score of the game.

Lampeter-Strasburg came into the game riding an efficient 18-7 first-round win over Crestwood but remained scoreless through three quarters.

“I have to thank my defense, “Corros said humbly. “I have to buy them McDonald’s or something. They came to play today, and that’s important for my job as a keeper, just controlling what you can control. These guys worked hard for me. I appreciate them.”

Corro continued to rack up saves throughout the game, proving to be the deciding factor in the shutout victory.

“He’s an All-American for a reason, right? That’s a game that he could hang his hat on and be proud of for the rest of his life. That’s my guy,” Doupe said, his voice growing choked with emotion.

Trailing 7-0, Lampeter-Strasburg showed little urgency to score in the fourth quarter.

Even when they managed shots on goal, Corros stood tall every time, covering every inch of the net.

“Defense played amazing,” Gallagher said. “They shut them out. Dylan is a brick wall in net, had a ton of great saves, which held us in it.”

When the final horn sounded, the Raiders rushed the field to celebrate advancing to the Class 2A semifinals, the farthest the program has ever gone in its history.

“It’s got to give us confidence,” Doupe said of the win. “Like that’s an outstanding team, they made it this far for a reason, too. We talk about it all year, we want to play our best ball in May and June, and we didn’t do that the first time we played them. Today was probably some of the best lacrosse we’ve played all year. Hopefully, we can continue to bring that on Tuesday to play an outstanding Marple (Newtown) team.”

Marple Newtown is coming off a 17-6 win over Scranton Prep and is the District 1 champion.

“It’s a big win, but we just got to go back and prepare for the next one, another big game, which will hopefully send us to another one,” Gallagher said.

The Tigers (16-6) are the defending PIAA Class 2A champions.

The two will face off Tuesday, with a time and location to be determined.

“It definitely feels good, but we have to stay focused,” Corros said, looking ahead to the semifinals.
