Phillies Rob Thomson Reveals Orion Kerkering Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Orion Kerkering was missed by the Philadelphia Phillies during Tuesday night’s 4-3 defeat against the San Francisco Giants. The 24-year-old reliever was held out of the game as a precaution after experiencing some late soreness.
According to Phillies manager Rob Thomson, Kerkering is “available” for upcoming games, offering a positive update for the team. Thomson indicated that the soreness was minor, although details on the exact cause were not disclosed, as reported by Lochlahn March of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Kerkering has become a vital asset to the Phillies’ bullpen this season, sporting a record of 5-4, a 2.83 ERA, and two saves, alongside 34 strikeouts over 35 innings pitched.
He maintains a strikeout rate of 21.4% and a walk rate of 11.3%.
Kerkering seemed poised for a save opportunity on Tuesday. Instead, the Phillies turned to Jordan Romano, who unfortunately allowed three runs in the ninth inning, resulting in a blown save and contributing to the loss.
As of now, the Phillies, with a record of 53-39, find themselves tied with the New York Mets for the top spot in the National League East. Their recent losses to the Giants have compounded frustrations at Oracle Park, where they have struggled significantly, having lost 18 of their last 21 outings there.
