Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm might be one of the more polarizing players in Major League Baseball.
Is he the type of player he was in the first half of the 2024 season, or is he the same guy who has struggled for much of his six-year career?
To say he’s struggled might be unfair, as Bohm has posted a 102 OPS+, but that’s only two points above league average.
Currently posting a 64 OPS+, it’s tough to get a feel for where things stand.
However, Bohm, whom the Phillies haven’t given up on, might not be as bad as some have suggested. He’s also swung the bat at a decent level in recent games, getting two hits against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday and two hits against the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend.
If this type of production continues, he’d be more than fine.
Speaking to reporters before the Rays game on Wednesday, it doesn’t sound like the Phillies are too concerned with his lack of production, and are more worried about him squaring the ball up.
“He’s barreling up balls,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said, per MLB.com. “Now the barrels are landing. Early in the season, the barrels weren’t landing.”
While Thomson should be more concerned about his production, he has a fair point.
According to Baseball Savant, Bohm ranks in the 76th percentile in xBA, 75th percentile in average exit velocity, 80th percentile in hard hit percentage, and 91st percentile in squared up percentage.
If those start to turn for him and balls start to fall, his numbers could look much different.
